ABOUT AMA

1. History

The American Academy of Vietnam (AMA) is a diversified company specializing in innovative English language training and professional education programs.  AMA evolved from the American Information Technology & Management Association (AITMA) in order to provide focus to the range of educational services and language training distributed among its nine campuses in Vietnam.

In July of 2010, AMA signed a cooperative agreement worth $3 million (USD) with Cleverlearn Vietnam.  Cleverlearn Vietnam is an affiliate of Cleverlearn, Inc., a leading and reliable worldwide provider of English language training founded in the U.S. in 1999.  Cleverlearn, Inc. established the Vietnam branch in Ho Chi Minh City in 2003.  In February of 2012, Cleverlearn Vietnam – HCM Branch officially merged with and was renamed the American Academy.  This new entity has been approved by both the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training.  At the time it acquired Cleverlearn (Vietnam), the American Academy introduced and embraced the corporate slogan, “Care & Success” as an expression of the culture and core values that animate AMA and all who are associated with the company.

The formal integration of AMA and Cleverlearn serves as the foundation of a strong and exclusive brand in the arena of American-style English training and academic preparation in Vietnam.  By unifying the programmatic assets of these previously separate enterprises, the newly emerged AMA is well situated and provisioned to seek fresh avenues for its innovative approaches to teaching and learning.  The corporate merger of February 2012 has also set in motion the exploration of and planning for the delivery of authorized undergraduate and graduate education, as well as research and program development both in the field of linguistics and in the area of English language instructional methodology (with a specific scholarly focus on the Active Learning model, the innovative and powerful instructional methodology developed and employed by AMA).

Since early 2011, AMA has established and maintained formal strategic partnerships with a cadre of internationally prominent and respected institutions and educational organizations.  Among the company’s partners are:

  • The British Council, including status as an official IELTS Examination Center
  • Cambridge ESOL Examination Centers.
  • TESOL, as an authorized Preparation and Examination Center.
  • Cambridge ESOL and the University Michigan, as a strategic partner in organizing international English examinations.

  • University Advisors International, Inc. (USA), as a strategic partner

The American Academy of Vietnam (AMA) was awarded Vietnam’s Golden Dragon Prize in 2011 by VnEconomy News in recognition of the company’s business performance, culture of service to students, and record of innovation.

2. AMA’s Teaching and Learning Methodology:

The American Academy delivers its English language-based educational program to students through a system called “Active Learning” (AL).  The AL methodology was developed and refined by AMA and is recognized as a powerful and highly effective means for achieving measureable and sustained competence and proficiency in the English language.  The core elements and benefits of the Active Learning system are:

  • Learning is One-on-One/Face-to-Face: The AL system enables students to have more time to interact with our faculty, who are native-speakers.  By design, native experts in the English language have more time than is available in more traditional settings to individually work with and support our students, to break through communication barriers, to develop enhanced listening, speaking, and writing skills, and to practice pronunciation (British or American English). 
  • A Personalized Learning Calendar that Reinforces Student Initiative. Individual initiative on the part of a student is one of the major determinants of his or her success in mastering the English language.  AMA’s Active Learning model provides a dynamic, but comfortable learning environment; one, which prevents them from feeling, tired in class and simultaneously bolsters their self-study discipline.  The personalized approach employed in the AL model shortens the time devoted to exam preparation, thus allowing students to accommodate and balance other academic or personal commitments. 
  • In addition to correcting all grammatical and vocabulary errors, as well carefully monitoring students’ written assignments, teachers emphasize on-the-spot memorization and practice, thus ensuring a higher rate of language retention by the student as a tangible result of each class session. 
  • In delivering the Active Learning program, AMA makes effective use of e-textbooks and e-learning software available through Longman & Cambridge Publishers.  This curricular approach allows for the balanced development and mastery of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  AL encourages students to focus on and strengthen their areas of skill weakness, thus endeavoring to eliminate the skill disparity problem that can stifle overall language performance.  High level and harmonious performance across all language skill areas is essential to success in international exams such as TOEIC, TOEFL, and IELTS. 
  • AMA offers two programs specifically designed for children and teenagers.  The English for Kids and English for Teens programs effectively employ play and game methodology to boost interest in language learning.  Furthermore, in addition to formal language instruction, students participate inengaging extra-curricular activities and field trips. These activities include AMA’s Amazing Race, Super Team Challenge, and a Spelling Bee.  These activities combine intellectual and physical pursuits with healthy social interaction to seamlessly promote at an early age English language acquisition, intellectual and personality development, and an appreciation for the importance of teamwork. 

3. Faculty:

At the American Academy of Vietnam, we take pride in our dedication to providing our students with the highest quality of English language instruction, irrespective of the student’s background or ambitions. In keeping faith with this commitment, AMA maintains a network of close to 350 English language teachers who are native speakers.  The teaching network employed by AMA is distributed throughout its branches (campuses) in Vietnam, as follows:

  • 260 in Ho Chi Minh City
  • 20 at the Can Tho Campus
  • 15 at the Vung Tau Campus
  • 15 at the Da Lat Campus
  • 20 at the Hanoi Campus

4. Physical Facilities:

AMA serves all students in state-of-the-art facilities, with modern, spacious, and air-conditioned classrooms and other learning environments.  Classrooms are fully equipped with professional instructional and learning aids set to international standards, including LCD computers with high-speed Internet access, DVD players with headphones, laboratory rooms offering the latest English language instructional software, as well as the Movie Learn, a resource-laden learning center, and a playroom for younger students in an effort to bring optimal benefits from an association with the American Academy.  The extensive facilities made available in the AMA campus network provide age-appropriate teaching an learning environments for all groups of students (i.e., working adults, young adults, teenagers, and children) enrolled in our programs, including young children who are served in specially designed “wonderland-theme” classrooms.
